Unknowingly Owen is continually surrendering himself to his environment and the strangers he must encounter to help him each day meet his basic needs for food, water, shelter and more. Not finding his answers, with each step he pushes himself deeper and deeper to the far corners of the earth and into his total dependency on others and his harsh environment for survival. Readers will sense that Owens ever increasing trust in mankind and his own ability to survive anything are driving him dangerously close to the precipice of life. Finally when Owen is extremely sick, exhausted, and as close to death as he can possibly take himself, his long sought after answers are revealed to him in a startling way. A must read for all, Jebbs literary style is completely open, intense, graphic, romantic, action packed, and riveting.

A roaring road trip of self-discovery!

November 11, 2007 By M. No literally - the familiar "bang-bang" of cops vs. crooks. You get to take a pause from the constant adventures of street officer Owen "Blue" Drew only after 50 or so pages into the book. At this point he begins his transformation from "street officer" into "peace officer." He leaves the force and sets off into the world - and what a world is waiting for him! In reading this novel I found myself flying through the cop stuff (just not my thing, really) in order to get to the juicy "big picture" of the narrative - the search for self-discovery and the lessons learned in traveling. One of David's great strengths as a writer were his unique metaphors used throughout the book. Here are just a few that I relished: "The Eros crashed ahead, taking on wave after wave and throwing back spray that hit my face like the snapping mane of a running horse." (P. 89) "The problem was that every time the Eros fell on her side, bilge water gushed all over the galley. Paper plates and foam cups drifted around me like mocking reminders of what floating was supposed to mean." (P. 96) "I closed my eyes and swayed back and forth like a cobra to the sound of the music." (P. 151) Aside from his colorful descriptions of all that he sees and experiences in his spiritual quest, the novel is not without salacious sex scenes and sharp wit. Again, here are a few tidbits: "Maybe it was the fact that she was offering herself to me the way someone might toss a Kleenex to a friend with a runny nose. Or perhaps it was the little detail of the boyfriend--but somehow, nothing felt right about this." (P. 134) "I wondered what the brothers of the Benedictine Order would say about the idea of promiscuity as a path to Enlightenment." (P. 148) I have no doubt that anyone who purchases this book will be done with it in one to two sittings because it is a true page-turner. Enjoy!

Life, death and enlightenment

This outstanding adventure novel is a mix of The New Centurions & Siddhartha. This enabled him to perform his job superbly. His excellence did not go unnoticed by the upper echelon and one day after roll call, Drew was called into a private meeting with his captain, lieutenant and sergeant. After commending him on his arrest record, the captain asked him, "If you had the power to deal with the gangs in your sector, to handle them any way you like, what would you do?" That question started one of the most exciting, and dangerous, times in Drew's life. Backed with the support of his superiors and fellow officers, with carte blanche to do what was necessary to clear out the gangs in San Diego's most crime-ridden streets, Drew launched his offensive, a modern day warrior, his horse a specially equipped Ford. Bypassing the street runners and middlemen, Drew set his sights on the leaders and the peddlers, figuring to break down their financial network and their leadership. Just how effectively he was doing his job was proved several months later when word was received that the gangs had pooled their money and placed a contract on Drew's head. And all of this is only in the first fifty pages, setting us up for the real story being told, how a man of conscience, wanting only to do the best he can, to protect the weak and the underdog, can have his soul destroyed by the countless encounters with evil. So Drew takes a one-year sabbatical from the job, determined to find his lost soul, starting with a job as crewman on a sailing vessel. When the owner of the sailboat cuts the trip short, Drew continues his journey alone, hitchhiking and walking around the world, living in a commune, taking jobs as he finds them. The year's sabbatical stretches to two before Drew finally finds the inner peace he seeks at a small Swiss village and he realizes that his days as a San Diego police officer are over for good. I never realized how many parallels your life and mine have
taken; it was almost as though I was reading about
myself. Obviously, i never starved myself because i had "nothing" to
eat (although i got scurvy while studying in Spain), or had to eat
dirt with a rifle barrel at my head (but there was this one time at
the B-52 base....jejejeje). But the journeys searching for an answer
to questions unasked and not fully pondered, are amazingly similar.

I remember meeting a girl in Mexico city after I had just been hit by
a car...She had been taking flight instruction at Purdue University
from the same flight instructor who had been teaching me at my local
airport....and was I ever glad to talk to someone in english after
suffering such a calamity. The world is such a large place, but yet
so finite...it makes a circle and once around it, you start the
journeys over again.

There were times that tears rolled down my face, and I will tell you,
it has been a very long time since i have shed a tear, let alone shed
one from something so moving as a book. I tell you these things,
because I believe you have provided many with a lot to think about.

May good reviews shower you.

Phil of Ohio

An Engrossing Tale

A thrilling, fascinating story with wonderful detail and personality. In addition, along the way he encounters highway robbers, sickness, enlightened monks in India and hunger and squalor on the streets of cities in India, Iran and Europe. But in spite of all the hard times, Owen, is always delivered to a new level of spiritual awareness and physical care. Your writing is state-of-art and is as strong as any writer in the "professional' category I have ever read. You have a real ability to write "visually." I cannot recall a book that I have read where the writing feels like watching a movie. Usually the "picture" fades at different times in a book while reading non-visual facts that add detail to a story. I do not have problems with dry facts to move a story, but in your book it was as if I was constantly looking and watching the action you wrote about. I am not sure how you do that, but it was truly a joy to read your writing. I hated to see the book end. I am glad to hear that there will be book two and three.

Thank you from Al Asad, Iraq

I was puzzled when I first received your book here in Iraq. In the midst of the intense battle against personal attack, violence and threats on his life, Drew discovers he is on the edge of madness. Instead of therapy he signs up as a crew member on a yacht. Drew takes a year's leave of absence from the police force in hopes of finding cleansing for his soul and purpose and meaning in his life.

While on the open seas in the midst of a hurricane, "Just before nightfall, the reefed mainsail exploded into rags. Instantly, our steering was compromised and so was our headway into the waves. From here on, the situation could only worsen." Although crisis followed crisis as Owen faced his fear of death, he began a journey to find inner peace. On this journey he spent time in a Benedictine Monastery, the commune of a quasi Indian mystic in England. While in India, Owen traveled with a Hindu Sadhu. Here he begins to see the bridge between the East and West.

In the aftermath of his divorce Owen sought redemption in relationships, often fleeting, establishing a new relationship, and then moving on to another. His journey took him through Turkey and India. During his "search for self understanding and love in a world that seemed completely psychotic" his health failed. Near death he started on a return trip to England for medical attention. Through the kindness and sustenance of "god sent" providers Owen's strength returned. His travels took him through Switzerland. Here Owen found the conclusion to his search for truth and understanding.

I found myself forgetting I was reading a novel, and was soon living vicariously through the adventures of Owen Drew. Jebb's detailed and moving descriptions made each setting genuine. The reader senses that Jebb had himself experienced the emotions generated by the people of each locale mentioned.

David Jebb has written a gripping fast moving, haunting novel. His insights into the thoughts and motivations of his characters give evidence that he personally has found the self fulfillment and purpose sought for by his hero, Owen Drew.

Richard R. When I got this book though, I only read it for about 15 minutes before putting it back down. I went promptly to the kitchen for some tea and good snack food. I then got comfortable on the couch, grabbed the book again, and didn't get up until well after it was time to go to bed! :-) 2 days after picking it up, I had read and quite enjoyed the entire story.

Instantly engaging, and captivating from cover to cover. I've always wondered what would happen if I just quit my job and traveled the world, so it's really neat to see my daydream played out in a fictional story. Also, being from San Diego, it hit close to home with the references to places around town. San Diego may be a tourist's dream, but it definitely has it's dark spots just like any city. I encourage other readers to pick up this one.

I was also surprised to find out that David Jebb is a first time author because the story flowed so well!

ME "Crystal" (San Diego, CA)

What a Roller Coaster Ride!

Thanks for a thrilling journey filled with suspense and thought provoking situations, truly an amazing adventure. The journeys of Drew Owen geographically cover more terrain than Moon's 'Blue Highways' and thematically more terrain than 'On the Road'. A detailed comparison balances the perspectives of Kerouac's Dean Moriarity. The conflicts in Owen's personal life are analogous to the issues facing the world. His inward journey is analogous to his outward journey. His Odyssey covers 3 continents and 13 time zones. Having lost himself in a myopic obsession with law and order, Owen finds himself, and literally wraps his arms around the world. Through a forthright and personal style we witness a series of events and encounters which round out the corners of the 'ultra- square' Officer Drew Owen. This remarkable transition is articulately depicted with brutal sincerity. The paradigm shift of the cultural revolution of the 60's 70's is discovered with the keen perception of a Special Ops police officer. Drew is a kind of 'Everyman' - an anti-antihero. To escape both the fury of the flood and the Indian spice fire? Holy cow what a story. I had Indian food tonight and laughed out loud all over again for Owen the protagonist, but compassionately. The story moves well and is an easy read - a real page turner. I can't wait to read what happens next, but so far it seems like one of those reads that we all can connect with on a personal level - I believe we all question our own purposes on this planet and I admire Mr. Jebb's honesty and humanness. It starts out as a pretty interesting cop story with some laugh-out-loud insights and lots of action, but as Jebb's protagonist Owen decides to change his life, the story and the character spirals and twists in a number of different and unexpected directions in what turns out to be ultimately an engrossing spritual quest that takes him around the world walking and hitchiking with almost no material possesions or resources. Along the way he meets and travels with everyone from roadhouse drunks to religious, mystic types of various faiths. I've found myself thinking a lot about this book and the questions it raises about life and values in the western world since I finished it. It is a very engaging, thought provoking read and highly recommeded unless you are just looking for another cop thriller which it isn't.

13 OKs

Bruce Robertson "Bruce" (Oklahoma City, OK) - I read the book in a day and a half... could not put it down. But for protagonist Owen “Blue” Drew’s life is about living on the edge. David Jebb’s novel, The Thirteenth Time Zone iUniverse Press, $17.95, thethirteenthtimezone.com), is a fast paced page turner that covers an arduous journey from the sleazy crime ridden streets of San Diego to the lofty Himalayan Mountains. Jebb’s protagonist, is the most unlikely character to be ‘on the road’, in the sense of the classic book by Jack Kerouac. Every decade has it’s “On the Road,” drop outs, cop-out and pop-outs who go on a quest. Set in the early 70;s the plot parallels Kerouac’s. But this opt-out is from one of the most ultra conservative of American institutions, a special operations unit in the San Diego police force.
The way Jebb transitions from gang battle-ground to blue water and hiking escapades hints at his personal life experiences. Tracing the journey of Owen Drew, author David Jebb addresses all of the themes from the cultural revolution of the 60’s with an insight that goes beyond the canned hype of that era including racism, sexuality, gender roles, peace, love, recreational drugs, freedom, choice and institutions. His writing combines just the right balance of character introspection, which some have referred to as a kind of “Siddhartha with a badge” story. The journey is one through many different cultures, religions and countries. But in the end the protagonist’s journey becomes a process of transformation in the courageous pursuit of life. Raw, refreshing, entertaining, insightful and inspiring are just a few of the words used to describe Jebb’s story. This behind the scenes look at the internal and external struggles in a complex life of a battle hardened cop is a story that many can relate too, regardless if you are a truck driver, attorney or school teacher.
As the nation’s first wave of Baby Boomers turn 60 this year, many people are no doubt taking hard looks at their lives. Some will opt to stay the course, others will be compelled to change, to seek more, and to follow their dreams, no matter the odds. The Thirteenth Time Zone tells of such a journey, as one man leaves behind a life of tumult, stress and uncertainty in search of inner peace and enlightenment. People questioning their life’s meaning will especially relate to this novel, but anyone who has ever wondered “what if” will certainly find this a compelling and inspiring read. Owen’s final conclusion is that there is no higher purpose than man’s quest for love and understanding.
The Novel may be purchased on Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com or at Jebb’s site for a signed copy at: www.thethirteenthtimezone.com

Taiwanese Reader's assessment -- Five Stars!

Think ‘Blue Highways’ on a global scale.

The Thirteenth Time Zone is real life drama that is stranger than fiction. But this 'opt- out' is from one of the most ultra conservative of American institutions, a Special Operations unit in the San Diego police force.

Tracing the journey of Owen Drew, author David Jebb addresses all of the themes from the cultural revolution of the 60’s with an insight that goes beyond the canned hype of that era including racism, sexuality, gender roles, peace, love, recreational drugs, freedom, choice, institutions.

It starts out as a riveting ‘cop story’ and quickly transforms into a fast paced spiritual quest. Jebb tours us through the world's religions as the protagonist Owen Drew hitchhikes around the globe, allowing circumstance to grind the corners off his very 'square' character. Just how he becomes a well rounded human being is a fascinating and true story.

Malcolm Vargas

Comments

Hello David,
I am the constant reader is this household, not my wife, so it was a bit of a surprise when she asked me if she could order a book... It was even more unusual to see her start The Thirteenth Tine Zone right away and stay with it. She is a very serious quilter, so she spends most of her time at her sewing machine. When she finished it she told me I HAD to read it. To me, that's like asking a kid if he'd like another ice cream cone. Your book I finished in three days, and it was indeed very good reading. It made me wonder if you had known Joseph Waumbaugh?
George

Readers Comments

Hi David,
Reading your book was breathtaking; it's a page turner if I ever read one. I met you and your wife at ",The Living Room" here in La Jolla. I was able to identify with alot of the situations.I especially loved the sailing part.

I travelled with my husband the opposite direction over a years journey from Australia to Europe then to Mexico and the USA.I was 19 yrs. old. It was 1975. Some of the best years of my life. After South East Asia and Burma ,Nepal and India my Husband got deathly ill.I was on a rickety old bus taking a short cut through an abandoned river bed when I noticed Brendon turning greenish, sweeting profusely and going in and out of consciousness, eyes rolling up into his head.I asked the bus driver to take him directly to the nearest hospital. He wouldn`t of course and their was no hospital.I finally got him off the bus when the tiny desicated, primative villages stoped and we got to a bigger sort of town. They actually had a two story concrete hotel.I got us a room up stairs with a window that opened out to the roof if you climbed out. I found out their was a doctor several miles out of town.I hired a bicycle rickshaw to get out there. The ride was long and bumpy. I was afraid the driver might take me somewhere and kill me. I chanted a Tibetan mantra the whole time. Eventually we came upon one of those white washed buildings with a red cross on it like you described in your book .There was an extreamly long line of people waiting, half dying. I pushed to the front as if a visiting dignitary,as if my desires were more important than any one else. The "doctor'' gave me some pills to give Brendon after I described his symptoms in great detail. The rickshaw driver took me back respectfully,a Hindu. When I thanked him he said "It is my duty",like they all would say when I thanked them. How odd,I would think. Brendon threw up the pills violently. Then I carefully read the bottle which said in tiny writting, only to be administered in cases of sevear blood poisoning. Then I noticed the expiration date of 1968. It was then 1975.

I gave up on doctors. At the open air market place and only shopping place I bought vegetables that I recognized and lots of ginger root. Back at our hotel, the cook let me boil the Ginger and then add the vegetables.I gave Brendon the broth daily spoon feeding him medicine drop portions plus saying the Tibetan mantras that I trusted more than the Catholic prayers we were both brought up with.Oddly my biggest fear was explaining to his parents that he had died in a nowhere town in north India. After probably two to three weeks he came around and sat up speaking coherently. He became strong enough to walk on the flat roof. One day at the market someone told me there was a tiny airport out from town.I thought,' now they tell me!' I immediately went there and got us seats on the smallest plane I`d ever seen.It had propellers that worked. It got us to New Dehli.Instead of going overland through Afganistan,Iran and Turkey to London we flew directly to England. My parents picked us up at the airport.Rather than bringing Brendon home ,my parents drove us both to the tropical disease hospital in London. They kept Brendon for 2or3 weeks. He was thin as a broomstick, with hepatitis, worms, and amebic dysentary.I had worms too but was otherwise healthy and almost plump, as the english doctor described me.

It is a mystery to me that I didn`t get sick.Months before when we were getting our vacinations renewed in Dehli I watched the doctor give Brendon his shot with a thick bent needle and could see it really hurt.I decided not to be "Macho" and bribed the doctor to stamp my immunization records as if I`d had the cholera shot anyway.I would rather risk cholera. I grew up in Venezuela and was allowed to run freely as kids were in that time.I think my immune system was familiar with tropical bacterias so I didn`t ever feel sick except after eating contaminated food bought from poor people from a train window in Burma. My body projected it out immediatly the same way it came in.

To cut a very long story short,I came to the same conclusion you did, that Love is what is the meaning of life. That love is what I came here for.At one point I realized that if I would love more and give more, that I would deserve to live.Doing Theraputic Massage in La Jolla for the last 25yrs gave me the opportunity to do that and raise my daughter alone. Now I feel so drained.I do not find reciprical love just tons of offers of sex without relationship let alone love.I don`t think it will happen in California .I will fly to New Zealand at this late point in my life and be open to being loved back in a country that has time to socialize walk, hike and really talk with the TV unplugged. That is how I remember life over there.I know that what I seek is over there and inside me.

I look forward to your next books ! Thank-you .I could not put your book down. As you can see it brought back memories of richer times and infinite possibilities.I spoke to my cop friend on the dog patrol, oops cannine unit. He remembers you from the Academy when he was 21 yrs old . He is now 45.You taught him tacticle holds in arm to arm defense. He liked you but not your brother.I was so disappointed that he won`t read your book but he is impressed that you actually published one.

I teach Yoga on the lawn outside at the Cove on Saturdays and Wednesdays at 8am,unless there is a pelting rain.Did you every read the Yoga Sutras of Patangali? Even Buddha realized that if the lute is strung too tight the strings break and too loose it won`t play.He realized this when he was on the brink of death from starvation and physical neglect . It sounds like all your strings are finely tuned and playing beautiful music now.

All the best to you,
Valerie O.

Reader comments from Barnes & Noble

reviewer, March 19, 2006,
I read this novel cover to cover in one night!
The Thirteenth Time Zone was a thrilling read! The novel allowed me the vicarious excitement of traveling to places and discovering cultures that I would never have the chance to encounter otherwise. This story resonates with anyone who has ever felt disillusioned and sought a sense of peace and sanctity in an otherwise chaotic world.

Brad, a new fan of David Jebb, March 17, 2006,
A GREAT READ
When I first saw the book cover I thought it was going to be another cops & robbers book. It is far from it. The author takes you on a life changing journey half way around the world with a style that is refreshing and easy to like. You can't help identifiying with the main character if you have ever given or recieved a hand up in your lifes journey. I reccomend this book to all. His writing combines just the right balance of character introspection with engaging events to keep the pages turning. The antagonist, "Blue", offers a behind the scenes look at the internal and external struggles in the complex life of a battle hardened cop. Just when I found myself completely engrossed with Blue's next event the story switches gears. So far it is a great read!

Reviewer: T. Chesser "TC" (New York City, United States) - See all my reviews

A friend told me about this book and I thought "oh great, just another retrospective cop story." I saw the book lying around and got intrigued by the back cover write-up. I have to say, it's really a real page-turner!

If I was a book critic, I'd say "Raw and refreshing. Entertaining and insightful. Inspiring! You just may learn a thing or two--Go grab a copy NOW!"

Don't miss this one, March 9, 2006
Reviewer: Donnita E. Hall (Carlsbad, CA United States) - See all my reviews

Not just another cop story. Although it starts out with life on the force, and this part is good, the bulk of the book follows a much different story line. The wide eyed and open dialog as the lead character travels across the world will keep you glued to the book. A kind of "Siddartha with a badge" story that will leave you wanting more from David Jebb. Well done.
Brad

Breakout first novel, March 3, 2006
Reviewer: ME "Crystal" (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews

I highly enjoyed reading this action-packed novel.

Book Signing at Living Room Coffeehouse in La Jolla

Living Room Coffeehouse, 1010 Prospect Street (Ph. 858-459-1187) in downtown La Jolla will host David's next book signing. The story of a long journey over difficult territory, a meaning of life and of one’s own life in particular. The final recognition: Life has no higher cause, nor higher meaning than love. The foul weather didn't detour the fifty friends and interested people that showed up for the event. The evening was set with Chef Gary Fletcher providing, crab cakes, BBQ chicken wings, cheeses, fruit, an assortment of other eatables as well as fine wines and beer. Background music was provided by two classical musicans. The crowd couldn't have been any more kind, polite and patient as I did conducted his first read and Q & A session.

Overall everyone had a good time and considering the wet weather. Thirty books were sold in one and one-half hours. I wish to thank all those folks that attended. I'm already looking forward to the next signing. Police work is not for the meek; it takes hard work and dedication to become a police officer. It takes even more courage to leave it all behind… The epiphany which led Dave’s fictional character “Owen” to leave the force in a search for himself is remarkable.

One can only imagine what a world tour with only minimal gear, funds, or planning would be like. That is, until you read this book. Dave Jebb conveys in an extraordinary fashion the excitement, doldroms, challenges, and providence Owen experiences as he travels the globe with little more than the clothes on his back.

As I begin a new journey in my own life, I have found this book to be an inspiration and a tremendous chronicle to life on the road. Thanks Dave, for sharing your story with us.

- John Barsness, Boise ID

David's first book signing

Well the book was shipped to me on March 1, 2006.
